The Pattern You Already See Through
There is a pattern so common it is nearly invisible — and you have already noticed it does not work:
"When I have enough money, I will do the things I want, and then I will be happy."
"When I have the right team, I will do the work that matters, and then I will be fulfilled."
"When I have the credentials, I will do the big project, and then I will be taken seriously."
This is Have-Do-Be. It places identity at the end of the chain — something that arrives after conditions are right and actions are complete. The problem: conditions are never right enough. Have-Do-Be creates permanent waiting. And the anticivilization runs on it — selling you the next credential, the next tool, the next milestone before you are "allowed" to be who you already are.
You already see through this. Every time you shipped something before you felt ready, every time you made the bold move before the conditions were perfect — you were running the other engine.
The Engine You Already Use
Be-Do-Have runs in the other direction:
Be. First, you shift who you are. Not what you have, not what you do — who you are being. Your self-concept, your internal state, the identity you carry into every situation.
Do. From that shifted identity, action flows naturally. Not forced, not grinding — aligned. The action matches who you are being, which means it carries a different quality of energy and attention.
Have. Results manifest as a consequence of identity-aligned action. Not as a reward for suffering, but as the natural output of someone operating from their actual center.
Stephen Covey called this the "inside-out" approach. James Clear formalized it as identity-based habit formation: decide who you want to be, then prove it with small wins. You have already lived this — every breakthrough in your building career started with a shift in who you decided to be, not what tools you acquired.
How the Genius Process Runs This Engine
The Genius process — Current, Desired, Actions, Results — is Be-Do-Have with a crucial addition: it makes the gap between current being and desired being explicit and measurable.
Current = present-state Being. Who are you right now? Not who you wish you were or who you used to be. What patterns do you default to? What identity do you carry into your work, your relationships, your decisions?
Desired = future-state Being. Who would you need to be for the results you want to be natural? Not "what would you need to have" or "what would you need to do" — who would you need to BE?
Actions = the Doing. Once the identity gap is clear, actions become obvious. You are not asking "what should I do?" in a vacuum. You are asking "what would a person who IS this identity naturally do?" The actions flow from the being, not from a productivity system.
Results = the Having. Evidence arrives. Not as proof of worth — as information. Did the identity shift produce the expected results? If yes, the cycle reinforces the new identity. If not, the gap needs reexamination.
And then Results become the new Current. The spiral continues.
The Spiral, Not the Line
Be-Do-Have is not strictly linear. It is a spiral — and the research supports this.
Aristotle observed that you become virtuous by doing virtuous acts — doing shapes being. Cognitive behavioral therapy models thoughts, feelings, and behaviors influencing each other bidirectionally. James Clear acknowledges the feedback loop: "Your habits shape your identity, and your identity shapes your habits."
Clinical psychology's behavioral activation — one of the most effective treatments for depression — is built on the principle that action precedes motivation. Sometimes you have to DO before you can BE. The doing generates evidence that shifts the being.
The complete model is a spiral:
- A small identity shift (Be) enables new actions (Do) which produce small results (Have)
- Those results provide evidence that reinforces the identity shift (Have to Be)
- The strengthened identity enables bolder actions, which produce bigger results
- The spiral continues upward — each cycle deeper, each revolution more integrated
This is exactly what the Genius process does. Each loop is one revolution of the Be-Do-Have spiral.
The Game Theory That Protects Your Direction
Here is where Be-Do-Have connects to something you already sense:
Have-Do-Be is the engine of zero-sum (degen) games. When you start with "what do I need to HAVE?", you see fixed resources and competition. Everyone is trying to get the same things. Your gain requires someone else's loss. The energy is scarcity, extraction, and protection of turf.
Be-Do-Have is the engine of positive-sum (regen) games. When you start with "who am I BEING?", you see your unique genius and complementary possibilities. Everyone is operating from their zone. Your contribution increases the value available to everyone. The energy is abundance, creation, and collaboration.
Same people. Same capabilities. Different engine. Different game. Different outcomes.
A network of people running Have-Do-Be competes for a fixed pie. A network of people running Be-Do-Have grows the pie — because each person's unique genius, fully expressed, creates value that did not exist before. That is the Superachiever network in its simplest form.
Running the Engine
-
Assess your Current being. Where are you running Have-Do-Be? Where are you waiting for conditions before acting, or acting without identity alignment?
-
Define your Desired being. Who would you need to be — not have, not do — for your vision to be natural rather than forced?
-
Take Actions from the new identity. Not grinding. Not forcing. Acting as the person you have decided to be, and letting the quality of that action speak.
-
Read the Results as evidence. Did the shift produce movement? What does the evidence say about whether the identity shift was genuine or performative?
-
Spiral. Results become the new Current. Run it again.
The engine is running whether you are aware of it or not. You already run it in the right direction on your best days. The Genius process just makes it deliberate — so the builder you already are compounds instead of waiting for permission.
That is what Superachievers do. Not because someone flipped a switch for them. Because they stopped waiting for conditions and started building from identity. You are already doing this. Be-Do-Have just names the engine so you can protect it.
